An Introduction to Fuel Cell Technology

As part of the UK Government’s Hydrogen strategy, there are plans for continued large scale investment into green hydrogen production and infrastructure. Fuel cell technology is a vital component of this approach to reach net-zero carbon emissions.

With a future role in industry and transport, there has been huge increases in investment in this technology globally. Fuel cell vehicles are a significant focus of global research, with their quick refuel times and zero carbon emissions.

This module enables you to understand the basics of how fuel cells work and their potential in providing emission free electricity generation for businesses and transport. It also helps staff to recognise the current applications of fuel cells and explore the emerging technologies in the fuel cell sector.

Course Overview

Fuel Cell Module Overview

  • An understanding and appreciation of the role of hydrogen and fuel cells in decarbonising the economy
  • Emerging technologies
  • The types of hydrogen vehicles available
  • Hazards associated with hydrogen vehicle systems
  • Working safely around hydrogen vehicles including refuelling

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Grasp the science behind climate change and the role of CO2 emissions.
  • Explore the concept of CCS and its potential to mitigate climate impact.
  • Understand the potential market for CCS with the usage of captured carbon.
