Empowering the Future: Addressing the Green Skills Gap

13 May 2024

In today’s rapidly evolving job market, there’s a growing demand for individuals skilled in green energy technologies and sustainability. As industries transition towards more eco-friendly practices, the need for a workforce equipped with green skills has never been more critical. However, recent research suggests that a lack of understanding and awareness of green careers is hindering many young people from pursuing opportunities in this sector.

According to a study by FE News, half of young Londoners express a desire to pursue a “green” career. Yet, despite this interest, there remains a significant gap between aspiration and action. This gap is exacerbated by a general lack of knowledge about green job opportunities and the skills required to succeed in them.

Fortunately, there’s a growing recognition of the importance of green skills in today’s job market. A poll conducted by hiring platform Indeed revealed that an increasing number of people prioritise working in jobs that positively impact society and the environment. This shift in mindset underscores the need for greater emphasis on green education and training to meet the demands of the evolving workforce.

At Hydrogen Safe, we’re committed to addressing the green skills gap and empowering young people to pursue careers in the burgeoning field of green energy. Recently, we had the opportunity to showcase our efforts at the Innovation Zero conference in London on 30-1st May, which partly focused on green skills and sustainability. Our participation in the event provided a platform to discuss the importance of green education and highlight the initiatives we’ve undertaken to bridge the skills gap between industry and educators.

One such initiative involves collaborating with colleges to develop tailored training programmes that equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for careers in green energy. By partnering with educational institutions, we can ensure that young people have access to quality training that aligns with the demands of the industry. Hydrogen Safe recently announced our partnership with Trafford and Stockport College group to futureproof their workforce through our Train the Trainer package as well as to develop digital assets for their on-site computer augmented virtual environments (CAVEs). This partnership demonstrates the necessity for colleges to meet with green ambitions and targets as well as showcases how Hydrogen Safe connects the supply between industry and educators.

In addition to our partnerships with colleges, we’re also excited to see major players in the industry taking significant steps towards green energy adoption. BP’s recent announcement of plans for the HyGreen Teesside Project is a testament to the growing momentum in the green energy sector. This ambitious project aims to establish one of the UK’s largest green hydrogen facilities, creating job opportunities and driving innovation in the region.

As we continue to navigate towards a more sustainable future, addressing the green skills gap will be paramount. By empowering young people with the knowledge and skills needed for green careers, we can pave the way for a brighter and more sustainable tomorrow.

“Let’s create a greener, more sustainable and safer world for everyone.”
